How to Measure Luxury Designer Clothing Laid Flat for Consignment

Intake-table reference manual for consignment boutiques and luxury resellers. Using identical seam landmarks across every shift keeps two listers from recording numbers an inch apart, gives buyers reliable fit context alongside international FR, IT, UK, AU, and JP tag conversions, and reduces preventable fit disputes on high-ticket pieces.

Intake Table Preparation & Tolerance Rules

Fasten closures and measure on a hard flat surface
Button blazers and coats completely, zip dresses to the top hook-and-eye, and close trouser flies before laying the piece on the table. Never measure garments hanging on a steamer rack, where gravity stretches bias seams and knit shoulders.
Smooth wrinkles without pulling stretch fibers taut
Sweep palms outward from the center line so the fabric rests flat without tension. Do not stretch rib-knit cashmere, bias-cut silk satin, or elastane-blend denim; record the unstretched resting dimension and note fabric give separately.
Record to the nearest 0.25 in and state flat vs. doubled
Round tape readings to the nearest quarter inch (0.25") and include centimeters (1 in = 2.54 cm). Always label torso and leg widths Laid Flat (with optional doubled circumference in parentheses) or attach a 2000 × 2000 px garment measurement diagram in listing photo #2.
Inspect for prior alterations before trusting the woven tag
Luxury consignment pieces are frequently tailored at the sleeve cuff, center-back waistband, or trouser hem. Convert the woven label with our designer size & care tag reference, then flag any shortened inseam or let-out seam allowance in your condition notes.

Visual Callout Reference

Jackets & Coats flat-lay measurement diagram showing standardized consignment callout points

1. Tailored Jackets & Coats

Structured outerwear from houses such as Chanel, Max Mara, Saint Laurent, and Loro Piana relies on internal canvas, shoulder pads, and sleeve pitch. Button the front closure (or tie wrap coats edge-to-edge so lapels sit in their natural overlap) before placing the tape.

MEASUREMENTEXACT TAPE START & END LANDMARKSRAGLAN, DROP-SHOULDER & TAILORING NOTESREPORTING
Shoulder (Seam-to-Seam)Turn the buttoned jacket face down and smooth the upper back. Measure straight across from the outer left shoulder crown seam intersection to the outer right shoulder crown seam intersection.Set-in vs. raglan sleeves: Raglan trench coats and kimono-cut overcoats (such as classic Max Mara wrap coats) have diagonal seams running into the neck with no shoulder crown seam. Never guess an arbitrary point; record shoulder as raglan/unstructured and measure collar-seam-to-cuff if needed.Linear only
Pit-to-Pit (Chest)With the jacket face up and buttoned, place the tape at the left underarm seam intersection right below the armhole seam and measure straight across the chest to the right underarm seam intersection.Keep side vents and back pleats smoothed flat underneath so extra back fullness is neither bunched nor pulled wide.Flat (optional 2×)
Natural WaistMeasure straight across the narrowest point of the torso, typically aligned with the waist suppression button on single-breasted blazers or across the belt loops on overcoats (with self-belt untied). On boxy cropped bouclé jackets with zero waist taper, measure across the bottom hem or mid-torso button and keep the tape parallel to the chest line.Flat (optional 2×)
Crown-to-Cuff SleeveLay one arm straight at its natural angle and measure from the top outer shoulder crown seam down the outer fold of the sleeve to the cuff edge.Inspect working surgeon cuffs for prior shortening from the cuff or shoulder head, and note remaining turn-back cuff fabric.Linear only
BOC LengthFlip the collar up or locate the center-back collar seam. Measure from the base of collar (BOC) seam straight down the center-back seam to the bottom hem.Always exclude the standing collar height; collar stands vary from 1.25 in to 2.5 in and skew length comparisons if included.Linear only

2. Dresses & Skirts

Eveningwear, silk midis, and tailored pencil skirts require attention to 3D bodice shaping and seam placement so shoppers know where the waist and hip measurements actually sit on the body.

MEASUREMENTEXACT TAPE START & END LANDMARKSDARTS, EMPIRE SEAMS & BIAS FABRIC NOTESREPORTING
Bust (Laid Flat)Zip the dress completely and measure across the front from left underarm seam to right underarm seam, 0.5 in below the armhole pit.Bust darts & cupped bodices: Structured bust darts, princess seams, and ruched cups create forward 3D volume that does not show in a flat edge-to-edge width. Let darted fabric rest naturally without pressing side seams wider, and note molded cup or dart fullness in listing details.Flat (optional 2×)
Waist (Empire vs. Natural)Measure straight across the horizontal waist seam, or across the narrowest torso taper on unseamed sheath and slip dresses.Empire vs. natural waist: An empire seam sits high on the ribcage directly under the bust, whereas a natural waist sits 15 to 16 in below high point shoulder. Always label Empire Waist when measuring an under-bust seam so buyers compare against their ribcage rather than their natural waist.Flat (optional 2×)
Hip (8 Inches Below Waist)Drop 8 inches vertically down from the natural waist (7 to 8 inches on mini or petite skirts) and measure straight across from left side seam to right side seam.Keep kick pleats and box pleats closed in their pressed resting position. On tiered or full A-line skirts flaring past 22 in flat, note Full A-Line Sweep.Flat (optional 2×)
Total Dress / Skirt LengthFor dresses, measure from high point shoulder (HPS) beside the neckline straight down to the hem. For skirts, measure top center waistband to bottom hem.On strapless gowns, measure center-front bust edge to hem and specify Center-Front Strapless Length; on asymmetric hems, record both shortest and longest points.Linear only

3. Tailored Trousers & Denim

Trousers and designer jeans generate the highest fit-return rate in resale when listers mix aligned and dipped waist measurements or measure thigh width at inconsistent angles.

MEASUREMENTEXACT TAPE START & END LANDMARKSWAISTBAND ALIGNMENT & HEM ALLOWANCE NOTESREPORTING
Waist (Aligned vs. Dip)Button and zip the fly, bring the top edge of the front waistband up so it sits flush against the top edge of the back waistband without pulling outward, and measure straight across from left fold to right fold.Aligned waistband vs. natural dip: Tailored pants are cut lower in front than in back. Leaving the natural front dip creates a curved path that differs by up to 0.5 in flat (1 in doubled) from an aligned waistband. Aligning front and back top edges gives the true interior circumference.Flat (optional 2×)
Front RiseLet the front waistband return to its natural flat position, locate the 4-way crotch seam intersection where both inner leg seams meet, and measure straight up the fly seam to the top edge of the front waistband. On gusseted athletic or equestrian trousers with a diamond crotch panel, start at the center midpoint of the gusset.Linear only
Flat Thigh (1" Below Crotch)Measure 1 inch down the inseam from the crotch intersection, then run the tape straight across one leg perpendicular to the outer leg/press crease.Keep the tape at a true 90-degree angle to the outseam rather than slanting upward toward the hip pocket.Flat (optional 2×)
InseamSmooth one leg flat and measure along the inside leg seam from the 4-way crotch seam intersection straight down to the bottom cuff edge.Check inside wool trouser cuffs for folded hem allowance (+1.5" to +2.25" available to let down) or note original chainstitch hems on selvedge denim.Linear only
Hem OpeningMeasure straight across the bottom leg opening laid flat from inner seam fold to outer seam fold.If ankle zippers or split vents are present, measure with the zipper or vent closed.Flat (optional 2×)

4. Luxury Handbags & Small Leather Goods

Designer bag shoppers rely on exterior dimensions to tell a Chanel Medium Classic Flap apart from a Jumbo, or a Celine Micro Belt Bag from a Mini, and to confirm laptop or phone clearance.

MEASUREMENTEXACT TAPE START & END LANDMARKSSLOUCHY LEATHER & DUAL-STRAP NOTESREPORTING
Base WidthStand the bag upright on the intake table and measure straight across the bottom base panel from left corner piping seam to right corner piping seam. For winged totes (Celine Luggage, Givenchy Antigona, Saint Laurent Sac de Jour), record structured base width primary and note flared top-gusset width in description copy.Linear only
Center HeightMeasure vertically up the center of the bag body from the bottom base plane to the top center edge or flap fold, excluding top handles and hardware rings.Lightly support unlined hobo bags with clean acid-free tissue so the body stands at its intended silhouette height rather than collapsing flat.Linear only
Gusset DepthTurn the bag 90 degrees and measure front-to-back across the bottom side gusset from front seam piping to back seam piping. On accordion flap bags (such as Hermès Constance or Marni Trunk), measure with compartments closed and unstuffed beyond natural resting width.Linear only
Handle Drop vs. Strap DropHold the handle or strap upright at light vertical tension and measure straight down from the inside peak of the arch to the top center edge of the bag body.Handle drop vs. crossbody strap drop: Never measure end-to-end strap length alone. Record fixed top-handle drop (e.g. 4.0 in) and removable or double-chain strap drop (e.g. 19.5 to 22.5 in adjustable) separately.Linear only
